Build a Baller guide: every slot, the real OVR weights, and exactly what the career sim rewards

Build a Baller is GoatLab's NBA game and its most played: spin a reel of real players, lock one into each of nine attribute slots, then sim a whole career from the draft to a Hall of Fame vote. This page is the manual, with the numbers the game actually uses.

The short version

  • Nine slots. 3-Pointer, Finishing and Playmaking weigh 1.2; Dribble, Defense, Rebounding and Clutch weigh 1.1; Frame 1.0; Speed 0.9 (the dump slot).
  • Frame is pure height: 50 + 3.6 per inch over 5'10", no cap. Yao Ming is a 122. A tall legend in Frame is the single biggest number on the board.
  • Every spin: 4% chance of a legend, 5% chance of an era Prime card, otherwise a live player weighted toward gold and diamond.
  • One Re-spin, one Boost (+6 to every skill slot, +5 OVR, never lowers anything), one Snag (take the card left or right of where you landed).
  • The sim rewards Finishing and 3-Pointer for points, Defense 95+ for DPOY, Clutch plus a good team for rings, and Win Shares plus MVPs for the Hall of Fame. 3 MVPs or 4 rings is an automatic induction.

The nine slots

Each slot is a body part on the figure. Tap a landed player's glowing body part to lock his rating in that attribute into that slot. The number you get is his rating in that one attribute, not his overall.

SlotBody partWeight in OVRWhat it drives in the sim
3-PointerShooting hand1.2Points (30% of the scoring engine), 3P%
FinishingThighs1.2Points (34%, the biggest single scoring lever)
PlaymakingOff hand1.2Assists
DribbleForearms1.1Points (16%) and assists
DefenseShoulders1.1Steals, blocks, and DPOY (needs 95+)
ReboundingCore1.1Rebounds
ClutchHead1.1Points (10%), ring odds, career length
FrameHeight1.0Blocks, rebounds, injury resistance, career length
SpeedLegs0.9Steals. Counts least in OVR: the safe place for a weak card

The OVR formula

OVR = round( sum of (slot value × weight) / sum of weights ), with the weights above. Total weight is 9.9.

Two consequences. First, a 10-point upgrade in Finishing is worth 1.21 OVR while the same upgrade in Speed is worth 0.91, so spend your Re-spin and Boost on the 1.2 slots. Second, because Frame is uncapped and Rebounding runs past 99 for the big-man legends, the two "physical" slots carry more of a top build's OVR than most people expect.

Why ratings go past 99

Live ratings above 72 are stretched (each point above 72 counts 1.55) so elite players separate from good ones: a 99 becomes about 114. That is why the all-time top builds show slot values of 111 to 122 and OVRs of 116.

Frame is height, nothing else

Frame = 50 + 3.6 × (height in inches − 70), no cap.

A 6'0" guard is a 58. A 6'9" wing is an 86. Wembanyama at 7'4" is about 115. Yao Ming at 7'6" is a 122, the highest value anyone has posted in any slot. Never put a guard in Frame.

What lands on a spin

  • 4%: a Legend (purple star), one of 84 curated retired greats: Jordan, Kobe, Magic, Bird, Hakeem, Wilt, Shaq, Yao and more.
  • 5%: an era Prime card ("🔥 PRIME '16"), one of 257 hand-picked peak seasons such as '16 Curry or '13 LeBron. These cannot be Boosted further.
  • Otherwise a live player from a pool of 531, weighted by tier: 15% diamond, 24% gold, 26% silver, 25% bronze, 10% common.
  • ✨ Shiny Spin (2%, free play only): a jackpot spin that guarantees a Legend.
  • Lucky daily: about one day in seven, the daily challenge's first spin is a guaranteed Diamond (85+).

The outcome is decided before the reel starts moving. Tapping ⏹ Stop skips the animation; it never changes the result.

The three power-ups

Power-upEffectBest use
Re-spinDiscard the landed card and spin again. When the card has nothing above your current average for any open slot.
⚡ BoostUpgrade the landed live player to his Prime: +6 to every skill slot and +5 OVR, Frame untouched, never lowers a rating. Era Primes and Legends cannot be Boosted.A live star you are about to lock into a 1.2 slot. Six points in Finishing is +0.73 OVR.
⟵ Snag / Snag ⟶Take the reel card one spot to the left or right of where you landed. You can see the neighbors. If one is a legend or a diamond in a slot you need, Snag beats Re-spin every time.

One of each per build. Some daily quests forbid them (Purist) or require all three (Bag of Tricks).

Draft Mode (the other way to build)

From the ☰ menu, 🃏 Draft Mode replaces the reel. A roulette lands on one random open body part, then deals a hand of eight players scored for that attribute; tap one to lock it. The power-ups become 🔄 Re-deal, ⚡ Boost, and 🎯 New Attribute (re-roll which slot the hand is for). Draft Mode removes reel timing from the equation and is the better way to learn who is elite in each attribute.

Hard Mode

Hides every rating until the build is done. The daily challenge also hides ratings until the reveal. If you play Hard Mode, the best-builds page is your cheat sheet: the same nine names anchor the top of the board.

The career sim: what your slots actually do

After the build you name your hooper, get drafted (see the draft table below), and the sim plays every season from age 20 to retirement. It is seeded from the build, so the same build always produces the same career.

Season stats

  • Points come from a scoring skill that is 34% Finishing, 30% 3-Pointer, 16% Dribble, 10% Clutch, plus minutes.
  • Rebounds: Rebounding, then Frame.
  • Assists: Playmaking, then Dribble.
  • Steals and blocks: Defense, with Speed helping steals and Frame helping blocks.
  • Win Shares roll all of the above together with efficiency. Almost every award keys off Win Shares.

Awards

AwardWhat it takes
All-StarWin Shares of 6+, or 21.5+ PPG, or an All-NBA / MVP season. No dice roll.
All-NBAWin Shares of 8.5+, or 24+ PPG with 6.5+ Win Shares.
MVPA roll, up to 45% a season, driven by Win Shares above 8, PPG above 25, OVR above 90, and team quality. Not before age 21.
DPOYDefense 95 or higher and at least 2.0 combined steals and blocks. Chance climbs with Defense above 95, up to 22%. No other slot matters.
Rookie of the Year2.3+ Win Shares in year one.
RingMake the playoffs (team quality plus Win Shares), then a title roll between 3% and 42% driven by team quality, Clutch, and Win Shares above 7.
Finals MVPA ring plus an MVP season or 10+ Win Shares, then 55%.

Aging, injuries and career length

Players grow 2% a year until 26 and decline from 30. Career ceiling age is roughly 30 plus a slice of Frame and Clutch, capped at 41: tall, clutch players last longer. Injury risk is rolled every season but the sim allows at most one injury per career. If it hits at 26 or older you get the Injury Crossroads: surgery (one extra season, decline reset, a lost year now) or play through it (fuller season, permanent decline).

Decision events

Optional mid-career choices (they can be turned off; the classic sim is unchanged). Each nudges Performance, Earnings, Clutch, ring odds or the Hall of Fame vote:

The Hall of Fame

Automatic induction: 155+ career Win Shares, or 3+ MVPs, or 4+ rings, or 1+ MVP with 2+ rings.

Otherwise the vote is a score of half your career Win Shares, a points bonus (above 12,000), and hardware (an MVP is worth 16 points, a ring 3, Finals MVP 3, All-NBA 2, DPOY 2.2, a scoring title 1.6, an All-Star 1.3), turned into a chance that hits 100% around 87 points. Inductees get an 18% earnings bonus and a vote percentage; 90%+ or three MVPs is "first ballot".

Verdicts

  • 🐐 G.O.A.T.: Hall of Fame with a 99+ OVR build.
  • 🏆 Hall of Fame.
  • 🏀 Hall of Bucket-Getters: missed the Hall but hit two counting-stat clubs (20K/25K/30K points, 6K/9K assists, 8K/12K rebounds) with at least one big one. The compiler's badge.
  • Hall of Pretty Good (80+ effective OVR), Hall of Mid (72+), Hall of Not Good.

Every career also gets an All-Time Standing: a legacy score (Win Shares, MVPs at 14 each, rings at 7, Finals MVPs, All-NBA, scoring titles, DPOYs, points, plus 12 for the Hall) placed on a 100-name all-time list. A score of 260 is #1; under 45 falls outside the top 100.

Leaderboards and the daily

The board ranks by OVR, with ties going to whoever posted first. You can re-sort by Points, Rebounds, Assists, Win Shares, Rings or MVPs. Basketball's daily challenge runs every day (it does not alternate like baseball or soccer), with one attempt per player enforced by the server. Questions people ask

What are the slots in Build a Baller?

3-Pointer, Finishing, Dribble, Playmaking, Defense, Rebounding, Speed, Clutch and Frame. 3-Pointer, Finishing and Playmaking weigh 1.2 in the OVR, Speed 0.9, Frame 1.0, the rest 1.1.

How is OVR calculated in Build a Baller?

A weighted average of the nine slot values: 3-Pointer, Finishing and Playmaking at 1.2, Dribble, Defense, Rebounding and Clutch at 1.1, Frame at 1.0, Speed at 0.9, rounded.

What does Frame mean in Build a Baller?

Height. Frame = 50 + 3.6 points per inch above 5'10", with no cap, so a 7'6" player like Yao Ming rates 122.

How do you win MVP in Build a Baller?

Stack Win Shares (all-around production) and points, push the build past 90 OVR, and be on a good team. The MVP roll is capped at 45% per season and needs Win Shares above 8 and PPG above 25 to be likely.

How do you win Defensive Player of the Year in Build a Baller?

Defense must be 95 or higher and the player needs 2.0 combined steals and blocks. Nothing else affects it.

How do you make the Hall of Fame in Build a Baller?

Automatically with 155 career Win Shares, 3 MVPs, 4 rings, or 1 MVP plus 2 rings. Otherwise a vote score built from Win Shares, points and hardware decides it.

What does Boost do in Build a Baller?

Upgrades a live player to his Prime: +6 to every skill slot and +5 OVR, never lowering anything. Frame is unchanged. Legends and era Prime cards cannot be Boosted.
